It did not take long for gun violence to skyrocket in New York City after NYPD disbanded its anti-crime unit of plainclothes cops on June 15 with three times as many shootings in the last two weeks of the month over the same period in 2019.
What is going on in NYC?
As an overreaction to George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis; the New York City city council and Mayor, Bill De Blasio, announced they would be cutting the NYPD budget 1 Billion dollars, yes with a B. Following this shocking announcement, NYC police commissioner announced another short-sighted decision.
Police commissioner, Dermot F. Shea, re-assigned 600 officers serve in these units, which are spread out across the city and work out of the department’s 77 precincts and nine housing commands. Mr. Shea said the plainclothes units were part of an outdated policing model that too often seemed to pit officers against the communities they served, and that they were involved in a disproportionate number of civilian complaints and fatal shootings by the police. He said the department now depends much more on intelligence gathering and technology to fight crime and “can move away from brute force.”
Several former police officers, detectives, and associations expressed concerns about the decision.

Disbanding NYPD Plainclothes Anti-Crime Unit Gets Mixed Reaction (Spectrum News)
NEW YORK – “It could be a long, hot, violent summer in New York City,” said retired NYPD Sergeant Joseph Giacalone. He worked for the NYPD from 1992 to 2012. Giacalone is now an adjunct professor at John Jay College. He says by disbanding the NYPD’s plainclothes anti-crime unit, the NYPD is abandoning proactive policing and sending the wrong message to criminals.
“You couple this with no bail for anyone who even gets arrested for these illegal firearms. You have a massive release of prisoners earlier,” said Giacalone. “This is kind of a cocktail of waiting for disaster to happen.”
Unfortunately, the experts were right, I was right and most people with common sense have been proven to be correct, that if you remove police embedded in the communities where crimes have been committed, keeping the numbers down, and de-moralize the force with financial and emotional public cuts, the bad guys would seize on the moment.

Shootings soar 205 percent after NYPD disbands anti-crime unit
Gun violence exploded across the city after the NYPD disbanded its anti-crime unit of plainclothes cops on June 15, with three times as many shootings in the last two weeks of the month over the same period in 2019, police stats show. With a total of 205 shootings during the month, it was the bloodiest June in 24 years — going back to 1996, when the NYPD logged 236 incidents, the department said.
And the shocking rise in gunfire — to 116 incidents from 38 between June 15 and June 2, a 205 percent increase — meant scores more victims were hurt or killed by bullets this year over last year. Gunshot injuries skyrocketed to 157 from 47 in 2019, a 238 percent increase.
One victim, Jomo Glasgow, 35, a DJ, was gunned down outside a house party on East 49th Street in Brooklyn on June 17 — just two days after Police Commissioner Dermot Shea announced he was scrapping the unit, a group of 600 officers tasked with preventing violent street crime.
“I feel like we are giving the streets back to the criminals,” Glasgow’s mom, Hazel Thomas, told The Post. “They shouldn’t have disbanded it,” she said of the anti-crime unit. “Whatever the problem they have, address it. But don’t disband the unit. Many lives would have been saved. Not just my son.”
NYC’s trajectory has fallen quickly. Through these decisions and many others in the recent past, the Big Apple is returning to it’s 1970’s deplorable conditions. Offering little hope and a whole lot of misery with declining buildings, dangerous subways, high unemployment, and out of control crime. Without supernatural intervention, I really don’t see a way back to its recent glory, another progressive disaster for the history books.
